A卷

Debate about the earliest calendars

Historical Trends in European Urban Design

Bird Colonies

Nitrogen in Crops

Why Did Nonavian Dinosaurs Became Extinct?

Climate of the Past

Gondwana

C卷

The Qualities of a Good Trout Stream

Historical Trends in European Urban Design

Flightless Bird

D卷

Cerebral Lateralization

Historical Trends in European Urban Design

Did Sauropods live in Swamps?

The idea that reintroducing Eurasian beavers to their former habitats is opposed by the writer with three reasons. Whereas the lecturer demonstrates that the reintroducing has some benefits.

First, according to the passage, the dams that the beavers build would block the flow of water, and therefore prevent the migration and reproduction of some fishes. The lecture, however, announces that the beavers build their dams merely in some rivers, and fishes can still swim to their breeding grounds. What’ more, the ponds created by dams will supply habitats for young fish to find food and hide for predators.

Second, the passage puts forward that the beavers’ digging behavior would harm the farmland. On contrary, the professor illustrates that digging holes would decrease the overall erosion. Erosion happens when the rivers and streams move fast. While the holes the beavers created wouldslow down the flow of river which means less erosion of riverbanks. As a result, the farmers will loss less farmland.

Finally, the passage claims that beavers chew through wood will kill the trees and harm the ecosystem. In contrast, the professor points out the beavers do harm some trees but not enough to damage the whole ecosystem. Chopping down some trees creates small space exposed to sunlight, and the small space could grow some new types of vegetationwhich couldattract new species of insects, and new species of birds would come to feed on the insects. As a result, the ecosystem would become more diversity.

What is the lecture mainly about?

Factors contributing to the rise of realism in theater.

What point does the professor make about the spectacles that were a part of melodrama?

They inspired the visual authenticity that was an important element of realist plays.

What does the professor imply about the costumes that were worn in the plays before melodrama?

The costumes were less historically accurate than those worn in melodrama.

Why does the professor mention a sink with running water?

To give an example of the kind of feature that might appear in a box set.

What point does the professor make about scientists and realist playwrights in the nineteenth century?

Both emphasized observation as a means to understanding the world.

What does the professor imply when he says this:

The connection between a melodrama’s spectacles and realism is not obvious.

这是一篇生物学讲座,它围绕控制植物数量的两类因素(two kinds of factors that regulate plant populations)展开话题。

第二, 其他要素基于发生在植物生长区域的环境中的事件(dependent on the environmental events occurring in the area where trees are located),以此来控制植物数量。
